Sunday School
History
The first St. George Sunday School was assembled on October 30th 1949. Father Milorad Dobrota organized the first classes in Midland as the first major project after the dedication of the Church in June of 1949. The initial group had 65 pupils from the ages of 4 to 16 years of age. These were divided into three classes under the supervision of Miss Marie Milanovich and four teachers – Diane Shorak /Tarbuk, Mary Gypaolo/Swaney, Daisy Gledich, and Mrs. Mary Adams. The class were held in the Lyceum of the church. They used textbooks provided by the Syrian and Russian Orthodox series. The Sunday School grew in years following.
Through many changes, challenges, and memories of those who have passed or retired we will move you forward 70 years to take-a- look at our current 2019-2020 Sunday School. We are proud to report that our St. George Sunday School is still running strong and growing slowly. Our Sunday School currently has 4 teachers and 21 students. Classes assemble every Sunday morning at 10:00 am. We have three classes ranging from ages 3-18 years of age.
Mrs. Bobbie Patterson has been the Superintendent for the past 10 years along with teaching the younger children ages 3-8 years of age. Ms. Paula Esapovich is currently the Sunday School Secretary for the past 10 years and teacher of varies age groups for the past 25-30 years. Ms. Mary Ellen Medich the Church School Treasurer and teacher of the older children has been teaching for 13 years. Ms. Dory Janke is our Sunday School Assistant and has been a part of our group helping in numerous activities for the past 20 plus years.
Our Sunday School has strived to carry on traditions of the past with programs celebrating St. Sava as our patron saint. We continued St. Sava programs including 3 memorable plays of the life of St. Sava, songs, interactive games with the congregation, and poems and toasts to St. Sava. We have incorporated a New Nativity play for Christmas. We still enjoy a summer picnic to begin Sunday School and provide Cheese-fare Breakfast to the students and congregation.
The Sunday School focuses on educating our children on fasting, prayers, gospel readings, bible lessons, Saints, and a variety of church traditions- dying Easter eggs, growing wheat, and learning to make church bread. The boys of the church still provide altar boy duties and the girls find ways to help with decorating and cleaning the church and lyceum. We aim to promote orthodox living in today’s modern society teaching the children to keeping their hearts close to God and a love for their St. George Serbian Orthodox Church.
